Easter has a completely different feel this year due to COVID-19. As the pandemic progresses, churches have suspended regular services, largely eliminating the need for flowery altars. With services broadcast, congregation members worship away from their homes, and florists mostly collect cancellations.
“We answer the phone a lot to accommodate cancellations,” said Adam Setela, a partner at Westgate Flower and Plant Shop, S. Ave. Oak Park, 841. “Since the time of the asylum there has been practically no sale at the place of sale.”
Florists have been hit hard by the virus with the cancellation of spring weddings, funerals, school dances and church services.

First Baptist Church ordered 78 palm branches, 13 lilies, four tulips, three hyacinths, one daffodil, two azaleas, seven hydrangeas and 200 individual perishable flowers, totaling $759.

First Baptist office manager Mary Lee Eneberg helped deliver plants to members without physical contact with them and keeping a safe distance.
“Some people wanted to talk on the phone” while she placed flowers in their homes, Eneberg said. “It could have been more valuable than the actual delivery.”
Eneberg believes that after a month of not seeing friends and staying indoors, people are starving for human connection.
“We don’t realize how much we need other people, sometimes just to be around other people,” she said.

Her husband, Bob, helped with the delivery. According to Eneberg, one family put a roll of toilet paper in front of them to say thank you.
Another bought a lily for an elderly man who had been unable to attend church for several months. Standing on his balcony, the man and Eneberg beckoned to each other.
Although the government has not named it as such, it considers the trip necessary to leave the plants.
“We all had to stay home and we respected that,” Eneberg said. “There’s a little voice in my head that says, ‘Well, you know what’s important? “The congregation is the body of Christ, and that communication and that connection is very important.”
