How To Make Fresh Flower Leis – If so, they will probably give you a beautiful garland of flowers. The lei belongs to the thousands-year-old god Kokoina, who – according to legend – brought the seeds to the islands to make lei and traditional medicine.

Regardless of how the laces were created, one thing is certain: they are an important part of Hawaiian culture.

Have you ever wondered what flowers are used in lace? Are there different types for different events?

The Art Of Lei Making

Thanks to their beauty and strength, orchids are one of the most common flowers used in lace. You may have seen them in white or purple, but they also come in shades of pink, yellow, and green.

The most popular type of orchid is the dendrobium type. It has been used in brewing for more than 200 years and comes in an astonishing 1,200 varieties.

Pikake is the Hawaiian name for jasmine and means “peacock.” White beans were first brought to Hawaii by Chinese immigrants.

Its fragrance is soft and delicate, making it one of the most popular choices for flower arrangements. Pikkis are often seen in lace for wedding leis and other special occasions.

Melia, also known as plumeria or frangipani, usually comes from the island of Kauai. Five Star seed was first introduced to Hawaii in the 1800s and grown commercially for lace.

Plumeria comes in a variety of colors, including white, pink, yellow and red. Its aroma is fragrant, sweet and sweet. In addition to lei, many visitors to Hawaii enjoy wearing a flower behind their ear.

A word of caution – be careful if you see palmeria growing in the wild. The tree has a milky sap that is poisonous to humans, so it’s best to keep your distance.

Tuberose lei is made from the tuberose plant that glows at night. The flowers grow on stems up to 18 inches long making them perfect for lace or bouquets.

The fragrance of tuberose is incomparable. It is one of the sweetest flowers in the world and produces a rich, aromatic fragrance.

Male pava, also known as stephanotis, is often referred to as the wedding flower of Hawaii. In fact, “pawa mard” means “fair marriage.”

Originally from the island of Madagascar, this jasmine variety was introduced to Hawaii hundreds of years ago. Loved for its waxy, delicate white flowers and captivating fragrance, it quickly became the flower of choice for Hawaiian weddings.

Interestingly, the male poa grows on a vine that can be used as a base for a le. It is sensitive to temperature and difficult to grow, making it even more valuable than its owner.

Feeling lucky? The lei leaf is believed to bring good luck to the wearer, making it a popular choice for graduations and other important life events.

Don’t let its name fool you – the herbal plant has nothing to do with tea. It is actually in the same group as asparagus, yucca and agave. The leaves are traditionally green, although there are also red, orange and yellow varieties.

Leaf tea is made by twisting the leaves of the plant. Different flower petals can also be cut to add some color.

Another favorite flower for Hawaiian lace is made from Malaysian or Micronesian ginger. Its strong, alluring fragrance makes it a popular choice for women.

Ginger can be attached to flowers either flat or with leaves. For a pop of color, it is also possible to have more colorful species with ginger flowers.

With its Mediterranean origins, you might not immediately think of poneymoi or carnations as popular choices for leek flowers.

Red or white flowers were first brought to the Hawaiian Islands by Protestant missionaries in the 1800s, women traditionally wear white, while men wear red flowers.

The carnation experienced a peak in popularity in the late 1800s, as it was the favorite flower of King Kalakaua.

Now that you know the most common types of flowers in lace, let’s take a quick look at the most popular styles.

The traditional necklace is around the neck, but here’s a tip: don’t wear it as a necklace!

If you want your lei as a circle, place it so that it is evenly distributed around your shoulders. Equal parts of length should remain in your front and back.

Although not a traditional style, it has increased in popularity in recent years. Headbands are ideal for weddings, luau parties and other festive occasions.

Unbeknownst to him, I was surprised for him while the whole family and I were waiting for him outside the stadium.

So what do I want to give my cousin other than money for her graduation? I remember in Hawaii it was customary for high school students to wear leis. And I have heard that the same tradition is copied by some people in California. So, I decided that instead of giving her a flower (like everyone else does), I would make her a new flower. So the question arises, what flowers should I use? I went to Google to see what flowers worked best. I know orchids are out of the question (as they are expensive!). I found a video by Melanie on YouTube, and it was just what I needed. He is a savior!

Gather your belongings. First, start by cutting the fleshy stem (shoot = peduncle). You first want to make sure you keep the “sepals (the small leaves at the bottom of the flower)” part of the carnation.

Next, place all the cut carnations in a tub, filled with less than 1/4 inch of water, to keep them cool.

Then, draw the string and see how long you want to see yourself. I had about 62 inches of wire, which I folded in half to give it an actual length of 31 inches. The reason for this is that I want to make sure the wire is strong and holds the carnation in place.

After that, tie the knot three times at the end to make sure that the carnation does not go anywhere.

Begin stringing the carnation by piercing the green stem end of the carnation. Push the needle through the center of the carnation (this can be tough, so be careful not to poke yourself–like I did once, err…twice.).

Once you have the carnation, carefully slide the carnation to the end of the string knot, and start on the next one. Read carefully, when adding the second carnation and sliding it over the first one, make sure the green stem of the second carnation is carefully tucked into the flower of the first carnation. You want to minimize the appearance of green fruit. Even if you get some green fruit, it just looks more impressive if less green fruit is showing. See below:

Now that you know the process, move on to adding extra carnations. You can change the colors to give it a unique look, or add 3-4 more colors to give it a wow factor. I have to admit, I was worried about how it would go with 5 different colors. But after stringing each carnation and tying the last one to each one, I couldn’t help but be delighted and inspired by the color combination.

Once I finished the laces, I placed two laces in a clean plastic bag and sprayed water on the meat. I tied the bag and placed it neatly in the fridge, close to the door, not behind. The florist told me not to put them in the back of the fridge, otherwise it would be too cold for the carnations and they would freeze quickly.

After about 4.5 hours, I had to take them to the air conditioner on our five-hour drive to graduation. I went to the stadium with the bags, then took them out of the bags. I turned the water off very carefully and gently, and allowed it to dry on the seats. I took them with me to meet my cousin. Lace is one of the most popular items sold during graduation season. Family and friends flock to flower shops to get their hands on these beautiful floral pieces! But if you are a crafter and DIY lover like myself, you will love to make your own! It feels so much more personal when you give it to a graduate, and it’s one more DIY off your bucket list 😉
