So what do I want to give my cousin other than money for her graduation? I remember in Hawaii it was customary for high school students to wear leis. And I have heard that the same tradition is copied by some people in California. So, I decided that instead of giving her a flower (like everyone else does), I would make her a new flower. So the question arises, what flowers should I use? I went to Google to see what flowers worked best. I know orchids are out of the question (as they are expensive!). Gather your belongings. First, start by cutting the fleshy stem (shoot = peduncle). You first want to make sure you keep the “sepals (the small leaves at the bottom of the flower)” part of the carnation.
Next, place all the cut carnations in a tub, filled with less than 1/4 inch of water, to keep them cool.
Then, draw the string and see how long you want to see yourself. I had about 62 inches of wire, which I folded in half to give it an actual length of 31 inches. The reason for this is that I want to make sure the wire is strong and holds the carnation in place.
After that, tie the knot three times at the end to make sure that the carnation does not go anywhere.

Begin stringing the carnation by piercing the green stem end of the carnation. Push the needle through the center of the carnation (this can be tough, so be careful not to poke yourself–like I did once, err…twice.).
Once you have the carnation, carefully slide the carnation to the end of the string knot, and start on the next one. Read carefully, when adding the second carnation and sliding it over the first one, make sure the green stem of the second carnation is carefully tucked into the flower of the first carnation. Now that you know the process, move on to adding extra carnations. You can change the colors to give it a unique look, or add 3-4 more colors to give it a wow factor. I have to admit, I was worried about how it would go with 5 different colors. But after stringing each carnation and tying the last one to each one, I couldn’t help but be delighted and inspired by the color combination.
Once I finished the laces, I placed two laces in a clean plastic bag and sprayed water on the meat. I tied the bag and placed it neatly in the fridge, close to the door, not behind. The florist told me not to put them in the back of the fridge, otherwise it would be too cold for the carnations and they would freeze quickly.

After about 4.5 hours, I had to take them to the air conditioner on our five-hour drive to graduation. I went to the stadium with the bags, then took them out of the bags.
