Easy Does It: 5 Hacks For Making The Perfect Bed

I have previously shared a list of “simple rules” that I want families to follow. My family follows suit – something I plan to hang up as a reminder. A little danger every day. These include things like “be kind,” “eat your vegetables,” and “always do your best.” Ironically, the one thing that people comment on more than others is the line that I don’t think twice: make your bed every day.

I have to admit that I love making our bed every morning. And even my husband, who used to laugh at this obsession, now accepts it. Honestly, he’s probably more delusional than I am today!

But it’s not just a bed. Usually, our house is beautiful. Speed cleaning is my jam – I like to clean the house every day. We also require our children to make sure their rooms are tidy before they leave for school.

Until I posted this seemingly innocent list, it never occurred to me that these habits might be considered strange. However, when I really started to think about it, I realized that there are some serious reasons why I spend my time making the bed and cleaning every day.

Keep Your Mattress Clean: Use Another Sheet, Lint Rollers, Hand Vacuum

This should be pretty clear, right? Straight and fluffy rugs with pillows in their proper places are nicer than plush blankets and pillows on the floor. A sink full of dirty dishes looks awful, while I can stare at my clean and shiny kitchen all day. In the same way, toys and clothes off the floor and hanging out are nicer than things scattered everywhere.

Taking time to focus on getting things done, especially when I’m setting a timer and racing against the clock – seems to jump-start my productivity. If I ignore the problem and try to avoid it, I will be more easily distracted by what comes my way, and at the end of the day I will find that I have almost nothing to do. This doesn’t mean I clean my house all the time, but I work more on the days I do.

I like entertaining and organizing parties and gatherings, and value hospitality a lot. If my house is clean, I usually invite people over right away.

This area of my life has improved a lot since our Big Purge last December, when we got rid of a lot of stuff. Now everything has a proper place again, it is much easier to store it and – surprise surprise – to find things again when we want.

My children have an unpleasant ability to create confusion on the spot. Does your child have this talent? Sometimes it seems like they spend their whole day dragging things around to get them off the floor. During our big killing I got rid of 4 big bins of toys, And there is still much to do. However, I have noticed that when we keep their room clean (and I help them have it), they play better. Like me, they can find what they’re looking for and focus on one thing at a time instead of being overwhelmed by 5,000 toys staring at them from the floor.

Who wants to come home after a hard day’s work to a messy house? There are many days when the husband comes home at 5:30, the kids are hungry, crying, crying, the dishes are left in the sink, dinner is not made, and the rest of the house is a disaster. (For the record, he never said anything negative and would dig right in and help himself to dinner, then wash the dishes. There was an unspeakable joy that filled his face.

Taking care of my house and belongings means I don’t have to replace something. As lost or broken. When things are complicated I just want to get rid of the clutter, which usually means to go to the target and mindlessly fill the cart with additional things that we do not need. When things are clean, I have no desire to be anywhere but here.
