How To Clean Pee Out Of Bed – I learned the best way to clean pee from a mattress. As a mother of 4, I have dealt with our fair share of bed accidents over the years. Fortunately, urine odors and stains (for the most part) won’t ruin mattresses forever!
We had the mattress delivered straight to our door and it was one of the best Christmas presents (to ourselves) ever.

Not only did we get a very nice new mattress, but we also avoided the dreaded mattress showroom experience and avoided all the shipping costs by ordering online.

It came completely rolled up and the husband and I unpacked it together. Then we let it sit for a few hours to expand a bit.
One of our kids had climbed into bed with us the night before and peed on the bed – leaving a huge urine stain on our brand new mattress!
While we had a mattress on the bed at the time, it apparently was no longer waterproof, so after some reader suggestions, we decided to try these three covers to protect our mattress from future urine stains:
Usually I don’t mind when our kids climb into bed with us at night. They are only once and we will miss their hugs one day.
Here’s How To Clean A Mattress And Remove Stains And Odors
I’ll be honest: I was crazy. I was so mad that my husband had to remember
The one who usually tells him not to “cry over spilled milk”. It was an accident.
To my relief, it only took two ingredients to pee out of the mattress, and I already had both on hand!
You probably already have these ingredients on hand, and if not, you can easily purchase them at any local grocery store! Our mattresses have been peed on so many times now (again – we have four kids!) that we always have these on hand.

There was still a faint circle, especially around the edges where I didn’t use baking soda, but I was happy that it was mostly unnoticeable.
How ironic, another one of our kids wet our bed two nights before writing this post!
Lucky me: I had the opportunity to try this method of weighing a mattress
Here’s a great view of the stain after the second bedwetting and the second time through the process…barely visible!

I used the same method to remove urine from my memory foam mattress and this time I saw it worked even better – even removing more of the original stain!
This confirmed to me that repeating the process really does produce the best results if you have the patience for it. In the years since that happened, I have used this method time and time again.
While ideally you’d just use a good mattress cover and avoid this situation all together, this method of getting pee out of mattresses is a life saver (and mattress saver!).

Cleaning pee (human or animal) from a mattress is not as difficult as you think. Kittiphan Teerawatanakul/EyeE/Getty Images/EyeEm
We spend many hours a day lying on our mattresses, whether sleeping, sleeping or relaxing, so it is very important to have a clean surface. But when you have a child or a pet (or both), accidents can happen. Yes, we are talking about pee. In bed. While your first reaction may be panic, you’re not the first person to have to deal with a pee mattress, and you won’t be the last, and your mattress is worth saving.
Ahead, we asked Baily Carson, a home care expert at Angi, about how to properly get pee stains and odors out of a mattress (until the next accident, anyway).

It is better to clean a dirty mattress immediately, but you may not notice the pee until later or until the next morning/day. Even if it’s been a few hours, you don’t have to throw out a dirty mattress, says Carson. There are two steps to follow immediately:
Determine whether it is human or animal urine before you begin and follow the steps below to clean a wet or dry urine mattress.
You love your pets, and while you don’t mind sharing a bed with them, you don’t want them to share everything with you. “Pet urine tends to have a stronger odor than human urine, so while the process of cleaning it from a mattress is the same, there’s an extra step to prevent the odor from settling,” says Carson.
“Animals tend to revisit the crime scene and are usually attracted to the smell,” says Carson. She recommends using an enzyme cleaner that removes the odor (in addition to what we can advertise) to discourage your pet from peeing on the mattress again. “Remember to clean a wider area than just the main spot, as pee sprays and can leave stains and smells that will make your pet want to come back,” she adds.

Good news: you probably already have most of the products you need to clean a mattress. Household products such as detergent, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and a vacuum are all useful for cleaning a soiled mattress. But if these products don’t work, or if you notice persistent stains or odors, it may be time to call a professional mattress cleaner to ensure you end up with a clean mattress. Peeing on a mattress is never a fun position to be in, whether it’s your baby or your puppy who hasn’t yet achieved potty training. Throw your blankets and sheets right in the washing machine, but unlike your bedding, mattresses can’t just be thrown in the washing machine. Fortunately, when it comes to peeing out of a mattress, most of the things you’ll need are solutions and common household supplies, so there’s no nocturnal stuff. These materials will also remove the smell of urine from your mattress and leave your home smelling much better.
Below you will find our step-by-step guide on how to remove pee from a mattress, properly disinfect it and remove any remaining odors or stains. The ingredients we recommend are common household items that may already be a staple in your pantry, so there’s no need to run to the store in the middle of the night.
As soon as you notice the urine stain, remove everything from your mattress, including sheets, blankets, or comforter, and throw it in the washing machine ASAP (double check that your comforter is machine washable). The earlier the better. If the urine has really set, however, we advise you to check out our simple guide to removing yellow stains from your bed.
Remove all the extra liquid on the mattress with your sponge or paper. Pro tip: don’t rub, dab! That way, you don’t push the stain deeper into the fibers of your mattress.
How To Get Urine Smell And Stains Out Of A Mattress
Spray the urine-stained area down with a generous coat of vinegar. It is recommended to use pure vinegar without dilution if there is a strong smell of urine because it is the best way to deal with the stubborn smell. Otherwise, you will be fine with a diluted vinegar mixture that is 50% vinegar and 50% water.
Use a spray bottle to avoid saturating your mattress with liquid because you risk damaging the bed’s foam, and you want it to dry in a timely manner. Allow the vinegar to penetrate the fibers of your mattress and leave it for 10-20 minutes to really make sure you get rid of that nasty urine smell. After you let it sit, soak up the vinegar with your paper or cloth towels (not the ones you originally used to clean up the extra pee, ew).
This will help remove lingering odors and should also get rid of the vinegar smell. It is recommended to leave the baking soda for a whole working day, e.g. 8 hours or more. You can also leave it overnight if you want to be extra careful. However, don’t worry about not being able to sleep on it – you can just throw a few clean sheets on the mattress and come back to cleaning in the morning.
After eight hours or so (even longer if you can), vacuum all the baking soda off your mattress. Use the attachment that should have come with your vacuum cleaner to make the process a little easier, or you can also use a mini handheld vacuum cleaner. Be sure to go over the surface several times – this is not a one-and-done kind of deal. If you rush through this step, you may not get everything
