Begin by marking the outline of the planter on the ground with string or a garden hose. Such dry-stack walls are limited to 3 feet in height, or they may be overhanged. If you have to move the wall location, call to mark the underground utilities in your yard before digging and delivering the materials. The North American one-call emergency number is 811.

After deciding on the shape and size of the structure, you can order the materials. Take your measurements with you to your stone supplier, who will help you determine the amount of stone, fine gravel, landscape fabric and topsoil you need. Order 10% more stones so you can choose. You can always use scraps for edging around gardens.

How To Build A Concrete Retaining Wall

Check out suppliers to find a stone you like (selection often varies by region). The price varies greatly depending on the type of stone. We used a stone called Weathered Chilton. We needed three tons of stone, one yard of fine gravel and three meters of top layer. If the top and bottom are relatively flat, you can use a different (and cheaper) stone. The straighter and squarer the stones are, the easier they are to lay. The methods we have shown will not work for round field stones. You can buy a capstone that is a special stone for the top layer, or you can use the same stone as the rest of the pot.

When ordering supplies, ask about shipping costs and forklift services. It is worth paying extra for a forklift to place materials next to the work area. Trust me on this one. Our driver couldn’t get his forklift to our yard, so we had to wheel everything (that took over 50 trips!).

Build a gravel wall for stability and drainage and cover the back with landscape fabric and plenty of gravel before backfilling.

To make it easier to place the stones, first arrange them in groups of the same thickness and length. As you sort them, set aside the beautiful stones to use as capstones. Keep them 1/4 inch thick. variation. We stock 3-1/4″ to 3-1/2″ thick stones for our capstones.

If you have space, spread the stones out on a tarp instead of piling them on top of each other. This will save you having to dig through piles later to find the right stones.

Use a square spade to get sharp edges and keep the bottom of the trench roughly level. Dig a trench deep enough to hold 4 inches of gravel, and as you do so, bury at least half of the first row of stones. If there is a slope in the yard, gradually “raise” the trench along the slope. The steps should match the thickness of the stones you will use for the first row of stones. Pour the soil from the trench into the center of the planter for later use as filler.

After the entire trench is dug, add 4 inches of fine gravel. When adding gravel, place a rock on top of each foot and check the level. Add or remove gravel as needed (little by little) until approximately level. When you lay the first row of stones (called the “base layer”), you will build it.

Use a less attractive keystone as it will be hidden by dirt and grass. Check each pair of stones for level. Pound the high rocks with a rubber mallet and add gravel under the low rocks, placing the gravel on top of the fabric.

Retaining Walls: How To Build Them, Costs & Types

You will need to cut some stones to fit. Mark the stone and, using a diamond circular saw blade, lower the blade at each pass about one-third of the way through the stone, making a series of cuts about 1/8 inch deep along the mark. (To reduce dust, spray an assistant with water from a spray bottle while cutting.) Then turn the stone over and cut from the opposite side. The cuts don’t have to be perfectly even. Tap the stone with a hammer to break the worn side. Save the leftovers for the filling.

After the base layer is set, lay the rest of the rows, except for the cap stone. Move the seams between the rows to give the walls more strength and a nicer look. Mix the height, length and color of the stones as you place the stones. Place fairly thick stones (called “bridges”) where you want to break up a single pattern. Indent each row about 1/2 inch inside the previous row so that the wall slopes inward slightly.

The hardest part of making planters is placing the stones in an attractive but seemingly random pattern. We often put the stone in place and then move it around a few times to find the best position. Take stones from different piles (except the capstone pile) for each row to ensure a combination of length and thickness. Take your time and if it doesn’t look good, don’t hesitate to take part of the wall apart to redo it.

When laying the last row, patiently select and place the stones so that the top of the entire row is flat and even (stones should be 1/4 inch above the level of adjacent stones). Thus, it will be easier to lay the main stone evenly and evenly.

Making A Retaining Wall For A Tree

If two keystones fit well on the outside, but a large gap remains on the inside, instead of cutting out large sections of the keystone, fill the gap with a stone wedge (cut to size if necessary). If the stones filling the voids are not as thick as the capstone, make up the difference by pouring more mortar under them.

Installing capstones is a labor-intensive process because you have to mark, cut, and dry them one by one. The position of the keystones will change slightly after cutting, so mark and place them one by one along the entire wall.

Mix a packet of solution in a wheelbarrow with water to the consistency of peanut butter, then pour some into a 5-gallon bucket. As with any cement-based product, the solution can burn the skin, so wear gloves.
