About three weeks before my sister’s wedding, I made a quick decision to make this DIY paper flower backdrop from The Exquisite Book of Paper Flowers by Livia Cetti to hang behind the bride and groom’s table at the reception. Now, this was actually a little crazy on my part because I had made hundreds of paper flowers for weddings over the year AND I wanted the backdrop to include types of flowers that I hadn’t tried before. Did I mention I decided on this three weeks before the wedding? Yes, of course, crazy, haha!

That said, I’m so glad I did because it turned out beautiful and was one of my favorite details of my sister’s wedding. In the process of making all the flowers and hanging the background, I learned a lot that I thought I would share with you all if you also want to make a background. And, really, it’s a beautiful backdrop and would be perfect for all kinds of events even outside of weddings! It would make a beautiful backdrop for a photo booth or even as a display in your living room.

I will not go into the details of how to make the flowers. Livia’s book has beautiful illustrated tutorials on each of them. I chose to use muscari, sweet peas, dahlias, roses, poppies, anemones, camellias, lemon blossoms, hibiscus, hollyhocks and Japanese anemones in my background, but you can make a simpler background with fewer types of flowers. Muscari, in particular, are quite difficult and time consuming – especially compared to anemones or dahlias!

Here are my tips and tricks for making a beautiful DIY paper flower backdrop for a wedding or your next party!

Even just two of these panels make a real home decor impact. You can use my planning and assembly tips to go as big or as small as you want. But really, if you don’t have a party to plan, if you want to make a DIY paper flower backdrop, go for it. Just do it for fun and then have a great photo session with your beautiful background!

I’ve been dreaming about this project and I’m so excited to make a paper flower background with you! After LOTS of flowers, and LOTS of experimentation, it really comes down to three things:

I used several dahlia variations and two sizes of my Easy Flower for my wall to keep it cohesive. The DIY paper flowers I used plus some bonus greenery are available in the free project download files. Of course, you can experiment with other flowers or leaves! Together, the largest flowers are about 18 inches wide and the smallest are only 4.5 inches, so you have different sizes to work with.

I used a good quality, 65lb 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock in natural shades of pink, rose and cream, with light green leaves. You can use the palette to match an event, school colors or any other theme you want. Good quality craft glue holds the flowers together perfectly, and a bone folder helps with some shaping techniques.

Your Cricut is definitely the way to go for making a paper flower background. I used a Cricut Maker 3, but you can use an original Cricut Maker or a machine from the Explore series. Some of the flowers and petals can also be cut on a Joy! Depending on the number of flowers you cut, your Fine-Point Blade and Cricut StandardGrip Machine Mat will get a workout. This is a good opportunity to check out my tips on how to make clean cuts and care for your carpets.

This paper flower background is a lot of work, so I designed it to be manageable for storage and moving once you’re ready to use it again. The assembly uses 20″ x 16″ foam panels as pieces of a puzzle, helping to build a flower in a wall of hundreds. We used 3M Command Strips to hang posters to adhere the flowers to the panels.

Even the heaviest panel is just over 2 pounds, so they are not too difficult to transport. I have even found rolling storage containers that they fit in!

First, download my Paper Flower Backdrop SVG/DXF/PDF design files from my free resource library – it’s Design #392. The design file contains many flowers and some greenery. You can print the PDFs and cut them by hand, but I highly recommend using the SVGs with Cricut.

Since this project is very customizable and requires some planning, think about your goal before you start cutting. What size wall do you want to make? What flowers do you want to use? Will someone help you make the flowers? It’s a fun group project!

Once you know how big you want your background to be, consider how many panels you need to create. I made an 8′ x 8′ wall and decided to use 30 20″ x 16″ panels.

I have found that panels are best with one of the larger flowers as a focal point surrounded by medium and smaller flowers, or with just a mix of medium and small flowers. Green looks good on both!

Therefore, I will show you how to estimate how many flowers you need for a similar wall with these three layouts. Again, everyone’s flowers and arrangements will be different, but once you’ve followed my process, you’ll be able to adapt it to suit your own!
